This was the best lanparty in over 2
years, hands down. We didn't pack the house with 250 people like
we have in the past, and we made no profit to put towards the next
lanparty, but it was just a damn good time. We had 150ish people
and their computers/consoles, 20+ spectators pack into the Civic Center
for GL27, and things went off without a hitch. I had finally moved
the entire network over to 1000 mbps uplinks for each section of the network,
we had a full 12 servers running for all the games and tournaments, and
everything seemed to work as it should.
Everyone I talked to was
having a good time hanging out with their friends or meeting new people.
I wasn't scrambling around like usual trying to fix network problems and
server problems. Things finally just worked, and worked all night
long! I didn't have to reboot any machines, Jim didn't have any
power problems, it was dare I say... perfect? I suppose not giving
up on this great event for 8 years has made everyone pretty good at it.
The lanparty pretty much runs itself once we get it set up. The
Guitar Hero folk ran their tournament on their own, the Quake 4 guys did
the same, Garrick took the Halo 3 gamers and organized them, Jim and
Chuck ran the Counter-Strike tournament flawlessly, and I slept in the
van some...
And so at 5am after everyone had left, we
cleaned up the building, and it was easy as pie. I had a good time
myself, and per usual I was not able to play one game. However it
made me happy to see everyone else playing games, and I get some sort of
joy by living vicariously through our attendees.
I have to give thanks to the following, and I'm sorry
if I forget anyone:
-
Garrick and his friends - for showing up early to
the Civic Center and helping is set up the party, and for running the Halo 3
tourney
-
Jeff, Chuck, AL, Winkie, Brandon, Becky - for
helping to set that beast of a lanparty up and tear it down the next morning
-
Hillarie - for taking a ton of pictures and being
the best lab partner EVER
-
Rafik - for helping get the Quake 4 tournament
going and keep it running while I slept in the van
-
Sharaz Jek - for donating most of the servers and
other equipment from his old DFWLanparty
-
All you random folks who do little things like
throw your trash away or help set up or clean up at the end of the night.
You know who you are.
It was nice to see old faces and meet new ones.
I can't believe how far we have come in 8 years of running this lanparty.
Fun times. I love you guys/gals. *sniff*
